What a little HAM we have on our hands! He's doing sooo well!! And GROWING like a weed now! We were beginning to wonder if it would ever happen! His little body must be finally healed because our last visit he weighed 19 lbs. WOW were we thrilled because in 6 weeks time he went from 16 lbs 10 oz to 19 lbs. Go Mark!!!

Can you believe this!!! He says as well as Signs No No!!! ROFL Go figure!! Won't say Momma but he'll sure tell you No No!! Sometime's he will also sign "More" we are working on it to hopefully become more consistent!

Is he crawling yet?? NO but he's the FASTEST little Scooter Bug I've ever seen! If I could just figure out how to attach a Swiffer Pad to his bumm I wouldn't have to sweep the floor! Dark pants are a MUST!

Simply White Beautiful Mill Ends

Pictured Above
Some of the white mill ends. Some come in Nice little lengths of roving, some in sheets, and there is always just big bunches that take a lot of sorting. It's all worth it in the end. Mill ends are definately not something to be afraid of. There are some Amazing fibers that can be spun alone, some need a little help, and some are just not suitable for anything and get tossed to the Dogs (Literally !!) My dogs always get a wonderful treat with the Mill ends that I deem unfit for spinning as I use them to re-stuff their doggie mattress's!! Happy Warm Pooches and we have 4 of them outside! It's cold here right now and I'm sure they would love for my sorting process to pick up speed!

Mill Ends in Color

Pictured Above
Yes!!!! That IS a Mill End Roving!! Wool and Mohair and yummy and soooft and sooooo much fun to spin!! You will see the yarn that I created with this fibery treat later down below!

Pictured Above

Here is another sampling of some of the Mill ends that I have! Beautiful red and green/mohair blend. Carded through 2 times to create the batt above. I didn't blend in any glitz or Angelina with that one but I wanted to show you how quickly and wonderfully the blobby sheet can become a beautiful spinning delight. This batch of mill ends had a really special treat! The first time I've seen those blue's. And I have to admit that sorting is going slowly so there is no telling what other treasures I might come across.

I'm terrible I have to confess! I could be sorting along and all of the sudden a Fiber or blend just begs to be spun. I'm a softy and I give in readily!!! The black and White was one of those that got me extremely side tracked but what fun it was! Yes it is the one right at the top!!

Yarns Spun from Beautiful Mill end Blends

Pictured Above
Beautiful Red and Black, There is only a touch of black in this but the Wool and Mohair blend came out wonderfully. Skein Specs. 57 yards, Thick n Thin 5-7 wpi, 3.4 oz

Pictured Above
For this pretty pink yarn I kettle dyed a big sheet of white roving in a shade of Hot Fuscia Pink but then in the carding process I added some wonderfully silky bamboo. Skein specs. 29 yards, 6 wpi, bulky Thick n Thin, 1.9 oz
Pictured Above
More Beautiful Mill ends. Simply stunning Black and White with lots of Mohair. A treat to spin! Skein Specs. 80 yards, Bulky Thick n Thin, 4-6 wpi, 4 oz

Pictured Below
Beautiful sheets of red with green greated me at one point in the sorting process and I just had to stop and play with them. I combined them with some pretty red and green angelina and carded them several times to blend. Spun two sets of singles and then plied them to get this wonderful yarn. So you have wonderful wool/mohair blend with some shimmer! Yarn Specs. 4 oz., 9-10 wpi, 150 yards.
Hope you enjoyed My little Tour De Mill Ends!

Busy Busy School Days

I've been seriously neglecting the blog lately! Seems like it's all I can do to keep up with everything!

Football season leaves us with little time between Games and practices and working concession stand! We also travel to a neighboring town to play on their team. Basketball season will be a little better as it is closer.

I'm the 6th grade room mother this year! A first for me and October is a busy month as it is when the School has one of it's biggest Fundraisers of the year! But it's also a really fun time and so great to see all of the town come out and support the School and the kids. One of the wonderful things I like about our Rural small town!

I was asked to do a quilt for the 6th grade class and with only 3 weeks until the big event I decided to search etsy and see what I could find. I went from looking at quilt blocks to looking at quilts and Found an absolutely amazing quilt! When I saw it I knew it would be Perfect!! Here it is: You should really check out this shop! Great Pieces with Great Prices!
http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=19902353

Now to this I am going to add a Large block in the center! A professional photographer is doing a collage of the pictures that were take! I am so excited to see what she comes up with! Her work is amazing and when she gives me permission I'll share her identity with all of you! As well as a picture of the finished product.

I also did a spinning demonstration October 2nd at the Heritage Farm Days in Parsons Kansas! That was more fun than I ever could have imagined! And I have another Craft Booth coming up in November which is for a fund raiser! Am again excited about that!

Seems like we are at the Dr or Dentist every week and I'm not exaggerating :) Mark for shots and weight checks. He's still my little guy! I guess it takes time after the surgery before he will start really picking up weight. I was in tears at the last appointment as he only weighed 16.6 lbs. Have an appointment today so we'll see where he is. Shots for all the boys again! I will not be popular in my house this evening I can tell you that!

Well I better get running just thought I'd do a quick update on where I've been! The shop has been very busy too and there sure are no complaints about that! It has really helped us through some rough spots. Hope everyone is doing great!

Mark's Journey

I wanted to share our journey with my fiber friends and family! I hope that everyone will be praying for him over the next several weeks, really for our whole family as we are preparing to embark on the next Chapter in our Journey.

On Feb. 18, 2008 we had our Son Mark via C-Section. We expected another bouncing baby boy, a few days in the hospital and then home to begin life with a family of 5. You always listen for that first cry the one that says "Mommy I'm here". I was so thrilled to hear that cry! Relief flooded over me, and I didn't even realize that they never bundled him and brought him over to me for a quick peek before taking him to the nursery as had been done with the other two, until later. I had a nice nap thanks to the Wonderful Anesthesiologist, I remembered waking up and asking the anesthesiologist if the baby was ok, and she said yes everything was fine and that they were almost finished with my surgery.

The Diagnosis

The next thing that I remember is being back in my room. A family friend was there sitting with me and we just talked I couldn't tell you what about. My husband kept popping in and out to check on me as he was staying in the nursery with the baby because he was having some trouble keeping his oxygen levels up. My husband said they thought he had some amniotic fluid in his lungs and that it would take him a bit to work it out!

As I reflect back on the events of that morning I just love my husband more than ever! While they were finishing my surgery one of the nurses in the nursery who was taking care of my son noticed a line on the palms of his hands that caused her some concern and she sent another nurse into the OR to ask my OB to come and take a look at him when he was finished with me. So my husband was standing by the incubator that our Precious Baby was laying in with 100% oxygen being provided in a hood that was over his head when my Dr came out to look at him and said "This baby is fine who said he has Down Syndrome?!" My heart breaks for my husband who managed to HOLD it Together, and throughout the whole morning he never said a word to me about it. I honestly think he didn't know how to tell me!

So at this point I think both Dr's were getting on the internet from what my husband told me and researching to see if in fact our son had Down Syndrome! Needless to say at some point I couldn't even begin to tell you when our friend left and my husband and our Dr (Family physician), came into my room and My husband sat in a chair quitely while the Dr stood at the end of my bed and said the had a few things he needed to discuss with us!

"We believe that Your Son Has Down Syndrome! And we think that he may have a heart defect!" All of the air left me in a couple of Sobs, and then as Fast as I Prayed the prayer with my heart "Oh Dear God I need You!", a peace came over me and I was able to ask how bad the heart defect was and what could be done for it. I can only tell you one of the options that he stated because I couldn't not and still cannot believe that it came from his lips "Do Nothing" I was floored and looked at my Husband who was still looking at the floor and told him flat out " I think our son needs to be at Children's Mercy NOW!!!!!!" I looked at the dr and let him know that we would definately not do NOTHING!! The next statement that emenated from his lips too will forever be ingrained in my memory. "Well now that I know where you stand we will be more Re-Active and Pro-Active in his care!" I'm sure I don't have to tell you that he is not Our Dr anymore!

Getting to see my Beautiful Baby Boy!

As soon as that man left my room I buzzed my nurses and asked for two things. A box of Kleenex and a wheelchair! I made one quick phone call to My BEST friend whom I knew would ask no questions and just do as I asked! Through tears I just said PLEASE PRAY, just Pray!

I was wheeled down to the nursery where I got to see that sweet face, tiny hands, beautiful little feet, and just drink in that first picture with my heart. And I knew the instant that I saw him that Yes he did have Down Syndrome, but that was nothing and my only concern was his heart and how can we get it fixed, what exactly is wrong with it! All of those questions were answered within the next two days. The roller coaster ride of our life was about to begin.

This was the first time I got to hold my Sweet Bundle! I can't describe how wonderful that felt!

3 Dr's Standing at the Foot of Your Bed

Mark was on an IV and couldn't not be taken out of his hood because even with a canula in his nose he could not maintain oxygen levels. I pumped every two hours and took it down to the nurses. Then I would sit beside his incubator and dream of the moment when I would get to hold him in my arms. Kiss his sweet little cheeks. I can't tell you how hard it was not to be able to hold him in my arms, not to be able to nurse him! I took great joy in being able to change his diaper :o)

After one of my little Milk Runs and visits with Mark I believe I left his bed around 2:30 in the morning and went to lay down for a bit before the next run. It was about 3:30 in the morning when I was awakened by the sound of someone saying "Dad! Dad wake up" I think my husband and I both set Bolt upright in our beds at the exact same instant! And then Dr. D started to tell us that there had been an Episode! Sheer Terror was all that I could feel and I couldn't breathe all I could think was that My Baby was Gone! My husband was the one to find his voice and instantly interrupted the Dr to ask the question "Is My Son Gone!" The sound in my husbands voice as the question came out ripped my heart wide open and I can honestly say that I never want to feel that pain again in my life! "No we have him stabilized now!" The relief that came with those words tore sobs from my soul with relief that God had not called his Child Home, but left him in our care, I never knew that relief could be so overwhelming as it was at that moment! We sat and listened to Dr. D as he explained what he thought had happened and then went straight to our son's bedside with the Dr's as we ALL prepared for the next leg of our Journey. Dr D was trying to arrange transport for our son to Children's Mercy. The blinds in the nursery had been drawn and all babies except for our son had been taken out of the nursery. The loving and attentive care of the nurses still touches my heart deeply, Dr D in all of the Chaos had felt the need to apologize for his appearance! And when he did so I glanced at his appearance for the first time, for I never would have noticed. I can't even imagine the feeling those dr's get when they get those calls in the middle of the night and in the wee hours of the morning. His hair was going every different direction, shirt all askew, no socks, belt hanging in the loops of his pants. He was a Glorious sight as he and the ER Dr and the nurses had SAVED the Life of Our Son! As transport was OK'd and while we waited for the Team from Children's mercy to arrive, my OB was called, and promptly arrived to dismiss me early so I could go with my Son. This wonderful Dr also stayed there with us and watched and waited as the other dr's and nurses cared for our son. My husband and I watched as they continued to work over Mark. I looked at where he had been in his incubator and saw the evidence of the efforts of the Nursery staff and Dr's. As I looked terror went through me also realizing the full effects of what had happened. We watched as the Lab tech's tried to draw arterial blood for tests. You could see the strain on their face and my heart went out to them for the care that they were taking to be as gentle as possible while undertaking the task with parents watching. They were preparing to put Mark on a respirator but the thing kept alarming when they turned it on! It was working but I have to say that when they are preparing to hook your child to a respirator that is going to breathe for him and you hear alarms it's not very comforting. As we watched Dr D attempt to intubate Mark it was just terribly hard. On the second attempt he got the tube in and I was able to breathe a sigh of relief. It was a mad dash to get dressed and get the few items that I had ready to go at this point so that we would be ready to leave for Children's Mercy which was a few hours drive for us. Mark would be flying on a fixed wing aircraft with a special Neonatal Crew! We were able to speak with and meet the wonderful crew that would be caring for our son. My husband and one of the crew exchanged phone numbers so that he could call us and let us know when they had safely landed in Kansas City with our baby!

Our Children's Mercy Stay

Children's mercy is an Amazing Hospital with amazing Nurses and Dr's. We were told about Marks condition and what to expect. And things didn't seem as scary! There were answers for questions, explanations about his condition.

Mark has a VSD Ventrical Septal Defect or simply put a hole between the ventricals which allows his oxygenated blood to mix with the un oxegynated blood, causing his heart to have to work twice as hard to pump enough oxygenated blood to his body. And with all the education came the sense that everything was going to be OK! They wanted to let him get stronger and bigger before doing surgery to repair the defect, and in some instances it has been known to close on it's own.

I have had to learn to do things that I would have never imagined having to do! Before we could leave I had to learn to insert a NG feeding tube through his nose! Ok that was very intimidating! A nurse took me to an Education room and gave me a couple of lessons using a special doll that they have. Even though it was a doll your hands still shake a bit! So I did it and that part got signed off on. One more step closer to going home :o) Back by my sons bedside the nurse gave glowing reports of my lesson, and told the nurse caring for my son that I still had to perform a drop on Mark before going home! "Well I'm getting ready to replace it right now she says so why don't we just have Mom do it!" I learned that when it's your child you can do things that you never imagined possible. I DID IT! And I did it on the first Attempt! Another step closer! Our next step was to move to a room where I cared for my son alone, with minimal help from the nurses. Rooming in with the baby! It was all falling into place and it was looking like I wasn't going to just get to see my Boys that weekend I might actually be going HOME with all 3 of them! One problem was that my husband was supposed to bring the car seat as Mark had to pass a test where he had to spend I think it was 8 hours in his car seat and be able to maintain his oxygen levels. Well my husband made a call to an ex co worker of his who went out and purchased a car seat and dropped it off at the NICU desk for us! He passed his test, I passed my test, I learned how to operate the feeding pump that we would use for his supplemental feeding since he didn't have the strength to take complete oral feeds. Had to learn how to draw up med's in the syringes propperly and other things that I'm sure I've forgotten. But we got through it all and got to go home!

Ronald McDonald House In Children's Mercy

I want to tell you all that the Ronald McDonald house that is right there inside Children's Mercy was my home while I was there. I had a room to sleep in at night, Shower facilities. Personal care items provided from wonderful people donating things. The use of Washer and Dryer and laundry soap and dryer sheets. You don't know how important something so simple can be until you are placed in a situation where you don't have it! I was taken care of by the wonderful Volunteer Staff and if you happen to be one of them THANK YOU!!!!!!

Our Year

We have had a wonderful 16 months now! There have been ups and down's. A few hospital stays for having a Mic-Key button placed for tube feedings! Below is Mark During his stay for the PH test to see if he had acid reflux which was required before the Mic-key button placement surgery. He was a real trooper!

I was a mess during his Mic-key placement stay! There are no pic's. But again he was a little trooper.

We have the surgery to repair the hole in his heart coming up the Middle of July! He will be undergoing Open Heart Surgery! For the Dr's it's routine and they do it every day! For this mom and dad it's Terrifying but at the same time we know that it is very necessary. He is not gaining weight at this point which tells the Dr's that his heart is having to work so hard that it is taking every calorie we can get into him and then some. We have known that this was probably going to be necessary but always held on to the hope that Mark's case would be one of the ones that closed on it's own.

July 14th will be his surgery day! Please mark your calendars and Pray for the Surgeons working on him, and for his strength and quick recovery! We are ready to have this behind us and to be able to Really move forward with our Three Amazing Sons.

Thank you for letting me share our Journey with you!

Clapotis

June 22 2009

The "Clapotis" is a pattern that many knitters have made. Now I know why. It's a fairly simple pattern. Once you get the pattern down it's repeat, repeat, repeat. I might have gotten bored and been tempted to cast on another project, but I was making this for someone else. I knitted until my fingers were literally sore. I was very pleased with the way it turned out. The yarn is just gorgeous, 50% wool/50%silk.

You begin by casting on two stitches and continue from there. Once you get the total number of stitches, you begin dropping stitches to create the cross bars.

The edges have a tendency to roll so I lightly blocked the shawl to the measurements of the pattern. Part of the charm of this shawl is the ripple effect it has, so I recommend a very light blocking.

This is a great pattern to make and would be perfect for those cool days or evenings at an outside cafe.

Hand Painting Roving

Step 1
Above you will see my section of roving having a nice soak in the sink with vinegar and water. Once it is completely water logged I very carefully remove it and drape it over a hanger to let the excess drip out. I know that at this point some people roll it in a towel to remove excess water but they usually have a tighter fiber bundle. This is just my preferred method. The main reason being that if you do a tighter more compact bundle it is going to require a longer soak to allow all the fibers to become saturated. While the roving is hanging I prepare my sheet of plastic wrap using a piece of tape to secure it to the floor at each end. Then I lay the roving out and begin placing my colors. I use syringes which I have from the mic-key kits for my son, but you can easily find them at your farm supply store or ask your pharmacist.

Step 2

Here is what the roving looks like after I have placed my dyes where I want them. Just remember that your colors will blend to some extent. That is part of the fun of it though. Just play and have fun! That's what the whole process is for me! It's a great stress reliever. And it's always fun to see what you end up with. The next step for me is to move my roving to the sides of the strip of plastic wrap and then roll them in towards the center creating a colorful wool sausage. I do this to help keep the color blending to a minimum.

Step 3

This is where you set the dye. Once I have the roving sausaged and rolled toward the center I then loosely roll them to create the round wheel that you see above. I say loosely because as it heats and creates steam the plastic wrap will blow up like a balloon. This is then placed on a microwave safe plate. Now my microwave doesn't have high or low so I can't really tell you which setting to use. You will just have to experiment. I have devised my own little method but there really is no right or wrong you just have to figure out what works with your microwave. For me I set the plate in and turn the microwave on for 5 minutes, after the 5 minutes I take it out and place another plate on top and flip it over. My main reason for doing this is to keep the dying even as the dye will settle to the bottom. In my little brain it tells me that if I don't turn the roving over I'm going to have a dark side and a light side. And that if the dye all puddles to the bottom it may end up blending colors more that I would like. On average my roving wheels take about 20 minutes. When I flip them I am also looking for the color of the seepage from the wheels which you will see on the plate. Sometimes the wool will absorb all the dye and other times and with certain colors there will be some residual dye don't panic it doesn't necessarily mean that your roving isn't finished. Some of the darker dyes seem to leave residual more than others and more often than not it's just fine.

Below you will see the wheels on the plate ready for their microwave sauna!

Step 4 Cooling
Once their microwave session is finished I leave them on the plate to rest and begin to cool. After about 30 minutes I take them to the laundry room and drape them over a hanger and hang it above the washing machine to let them finish cooling and the excess water to drip out before the begin their rinsing soak. I make sure an undo the ends of the roll to allow the extra water and dye to run out.

Step 5 Rinsing

For the rinsing step I prefer to use my washer. You can use your sink or a tub of water what ever you choose. For me the washer is the easiest. Only if you have a top loading washer though. I partially fill the washer (just enough to cover the amount of roving I will be placing in. Then I remove the plastic from the roving and place the roving into the washer. I let it soak for about an hour and check the water to see how the dyes took. I never shut the lid :o) I have accidentally left the washer on after filling and shut the lid only to hear that lovely agitating sound EEEEK!!! After soaking and checking I then set my washer to the shortets gentlest spin cycle. Let it spin and repeat the process at least one more time. If you like you can put a bit of wool wash in the last rinse cycle.

Well I guess that's about it! Have fun and don't be afraid of color!

Waiting in The Wings

Here is yet another look at what is waiting to go into the shop. I did manage to get a few items listed yesterday and so my rack doesn't look quite as full. I'm not sure what I will get accomplished this week but going to work hard over the next couple of weeks trying to get prepared for July! I have a special story that I want to share with my fiber friends but I'm still working on it so stay tuned LOL

I was having so much fun taking pictures outside last week and now we have the Yucky Cloudy weather again. And the puppies took off with my little blanket I had been placing under my yarns and batts. Little stinkers!! Well it's washed and ready to go as soon as the weather allows. So hopefully I get to have some more picture fun soon!

As for now though it's time to get back to my fiber Den and get some work done before the house full of Boys begins to awaken. Hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!

Dying To Show You

Above you will see just a few of the items I'm working on! A couple of rovings waiting for their turn at the spindle, several yarns drying and waiting to be listed in the shop!

What you don't see are the rovings that are being dyed today! I have some amazing batts that I carded this morning just waiting for me to get a chance to sit down at the Trusty Kick Spindle. By the way the Kick Spindle is my preferred method of spinning at this point in time. I think because it actually gives me a lot more control over my fiber and what I want it to do. Although the Boogie Fever that I listed recently was a blast to spin and I did spin it on my wheel. For now it's back to the bowls of dye and the yummy pre-soaking rovings just waiting for my crazy ideas. I have to say I'm having fun learning the Art of Hand Painting rovings. I love the excitement of expecting one thing only to find that it did it's own thing. Yep it's just a Fiber Fantasy Unfolding here on my little Patch of Pumpkin Creek!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week!!

My Wonderful Mothers Day

I truly feel blessed to me a mom to Three wonderful Boys!! My son wrote this little letter for me! How is it that they forget our Faults! I love this letter, I love my sons and feel privelaged to have the opportunity to be their Mother! I will be getting a frame for it and putting it in my bedroom!! A good reminder when I begin to faulter.

I had decided that I didn't want to go out to Eat for Mothers Day! I wanted to be at home with my family and have a wonderful meal and Be A Mom! I invited my mom and step-dad to join us and my nephew. I made two pies, one Apple/Blueberry, and one was a Triple Berry Cherry Pie (OH SOOOO GOOD). I marinated some sirloin steak all day so that they would be good and tender (no way was I going to pay the price for the rib eye or kc strips) and my husband cooked them on the grill, and along with that we had the usual BBQ side dishes of coleslaw, baked beans, and fried potato's, with mixed veggies (again I refused to pay .50 cents for an ear of corn on the cob), and lastly good old texas toast garlic bread(half of it was eaten before it made it to the table). It was a wonderful day of cooking for my family, fun conversation with everyone around the table, and a nice relaxing evening visiting over coffee while the boys played outside.

All the boys are asleep now and I cannot imagine the day being any better than it was!

Below is a picture of The Boys and Me! This was sooo hard to get three boys looking at the camera and smiling at the same time. So this was as good as it gets.

This is my Absolutely Amazing husband. I don't know how he has put up with me for over 20 years! He is my Rock!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mothers Day!
